Books and guides for 3rd through 5th grade:
Sarah Whitcher's Story This book contains the miraculous story of the rescue of a small girl lost in the woods in 1783. The story is based on a true incident and contains a wonderful message of faith. Although the title and the picture on the front indicates a girl book, the story is interesting to both boys and girls because Sarah’s siblings are very involved in the story. A secular picture book that tells that same story is The Bear That Heard Crying, by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock and Helen Kinsey; this book is readily available at public libraries.
Carolina's Courage Discover the meaning of courage as you travel west with the Putnam family. This story is fiction set in the mid-1800s.
Mountain Born (Newbery Honor Book) Peter grows as he experiences the hardships and joys of a shepherd's life. A study of Psalm 23 is included in the guide. Note: The sequel to Mountain Born, A Place for Peter, is also available from CNS. A guide has not been written for this book; it is mentioned as a post reading activity in the guide for Mountain Born.
